The town’s centerpiece is the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, a church that blends Catholic and indigenous beliefs. Inside we quietly sat on the floor, immersing ourselves in the sacred atmosphere. Candles flickered over carpets of pine needles, filling the air with a fragrant smoke. Local Tzotzil people moved through the space, performing their prayers and rituals with profound devotion. We watched in awe, mindful of the sacred customs and the strict prohibition on photography. It was a rare glimpse into a living tradition, felt far more deeply in person than any image could convey.

Traditional Market
Adjacent to the church, the market is vibrant on Sundays, offering local produce, textiles, and handicrafts. It’s an excellent opportunity to observe daily life and purchase authentic Tzotzil crafts .

Our first stop was Cascadas del Chiflón, where the series of waterfalls—especially the towering Velo de Novia—left us in awe. Walking along the trails, we admired the powerful cascades and lush surroundings while our guide shared fascinating local stories.
Next, we visited Montebello Lakes National Park, marveling at the vibrant turquoise and emerald lakes nestled among pine forests. With our guide’s insights, we learned about the lakes’ geology and the surrounding ecosystem as we strolled along the peaceful trails.
We made a brief stop near the Guatemala border, taking in the scenery and the small local markets.
Finally, we walked briefly inside Guatemala, enjoying stunning views of the countryside, meeting some local people, and buying a few handmade souvenirs. The guided tour made the day seamless and unforgettable, allowing us to fully experience the natural and cultural wonders of the region.
